13 日晚間，一則「美國連鎖量販 Walmart 10 月 1 日起將接受萊特幣支付」的假新聞稿引發多家大型媒體報導，導致萊特幣 (LTC) 在短時間內上漲超過 30% 再跌回原點。
事件起點：新聞稿服務網 GlobeNewswire
專門提供新聞稿發佈的大型網站 GlobeNewswire 首先發布，美國大型連鎖商場 Walmart 宣布與萊特幣達成合作，並將提供線上商場支付選項：
路透社、CNBC 與彭博等主流媒體很快跟著報導這項消息，幣圈媒體包括 CoinDesk 與 Decrypt 同樣推播了這則消息。連萊特幣基金會的推特也轉發了這則新聞。
不過，很快地媒體 The Block 的研究員發現事有蹊蹺，用於發佈的新聞稿的註冊信箱 WALMART-CORP. COM 上個月才註冊，並且無法連接到任何網站。

各家媒體開始揭露此為假新聞，並刪除原先的網頁。萊特幣基金會也發出公告澄清：

假新聞氾濫，易操弄市場
矽谷知名創投 a16z 市場負責人評論，這類事件並非加密產業獨有。而媒體有責任去驗證消息真偽，儘管加密產業是個快速改變且不易理解的產業，但新聞工作者必須小心謹慎。她也認為，通訊社發布的新聞稿並不如官方網站發佈的消息來得可靠。
